Depository Participants : What is Depository Participant ? Let's discuss

    Event Date: 01 Jan 2009 - 31 Dec 2010
Author: puntercalls.com
Subject: What is Depository Participant ? Let's discuss
Posted: 19 May 2009 at 6:19pm

What is Depository Participant ? Let's discuss all about Depository Participant.

In India, a Depository Participant (DP) is described as an agent of the depository. They are the intermediaries between the depository and the investors. The relationship between the DPs and the depository is governed by an agreement made between the two under the Depositories Act. In a strictly legal sense, a DP is an entity who is registered as such with SEBI under the provisions of the SEBI Act. As per the provisions of this Act, a DP can offer depository-related services only after obtaining a certificate of registration from SEBI.

SEBI (D&P) Regulations, 1996 prescribe a minimum net worth of Rs. 50 lakh for stockbrokers, R&T agents and non-banking finance companies (NBFC), for granting them a certificate of registration to act as DPs. If a stockbroker seeks to act as a DP in more than one depository, he should comply with the specified net worth criterion separately for each such depository. No minimum net worth criterion has been prescribed for other categories of DPs; however, depositories can fix a higher net worth criterion for their DPs. NSDL requires a minimum net worth of Rs. 100 lakh to be eligible to become a DP as against Rs. 50 lakh prescribed by SEBI (D&P) Regulations.

Basics of Depository

Depository can in many ways be compared to a bank. Securities of the investors are held in electronic / book entry form by the Depository. Apart from holding the securities, Depository also provides services related to transactions in securities. Several consider the Depository to be another custodian. But the depository has an advantage over the custodian- the Depository can transfer the Beneficial Ownership of the Securities, legally, which a custodian cannot do.

Benefits of Depository

    * Bad delivery eliminated
    * Immediate transfer of shares
    * No stamp duty on such transfers
    * Elimination of risks that are normally associated in dealing with Physical certificates - loss / theft / mutilation due to careless handling / forgery / etc.
    * Reduced transaction cost

How do Depository operate

Depository interacts with its clients / investors through its agents, called Depository Participants normally known as DPs.

For any investor / client, to avail the services provided by the Depository, has to open Depository account, known as Demat A/c, with any of the DPs.

Demat Account Opening

A demat account are opened on the same lines as that of a Bank Account. Prescribed Account opening forms are available with the DP, needs to be filled in. Standard Agreements are to be signed by the Client and the DP, which details the rights and obligations of both parties. Along with the form the client requires to attach Photographs of Account holder, Attested copies of proof of residence and proof of identity needs to be submitted along with the account opening form.

In case of Corporate clients, additional attachments required are - true copy of the resolution for Demat a/c opening along with signatories to operate the account and true copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association is to be attached.

Services provided by Depository

    * Dematerialisation (usually known as demat) is converting physical certificates to electronic form
    * Rematerialisation, known as remat, is reverse of demat, i.e. getting physical certificates from the electronic securities
    * Transfer of securities, change of beneficial ownership
    * Settlement of trades done on exchange connected to the Depository
    * Pledge / Hypothecation of demat shares, viz. Loan against shares
    * Electronic credit in public offering of the Companies
    * Non - Cash corporate benefits, viz. Bonus / Rights - direct credit into electronic form
    * Depository restrict the risk of fraud.

No. of Depository in the country

Currently there are two depositories operational in the country.

   1. National Securities Depository Ltd.
   2. Central Depository Services Ltd.

Edited by puntercalls.com - 19 May 2009 at 6:20pm

Members include China,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with Indiaas one of its four observers.

Right after the SCO meeting, the BRIC country (Brazil, Russia, Indiaand China) leaders met formally for the first time. It is not merelycoincident that three of them have expressed a desire to adjust theirforeign exchange reserve portfolios by reducing the share or volume ofUS dollar assets.

China has just halted the increase its holding of US Treasury debt.By the end of April, China held $763.5 billion of it, a fall of $4.4billion, month on month, the first time China has reduced its Treasuryholdings. Since May, 2008, China has increased its holding by $260billion.

Inside China, USD is a hate-more-than-love story. Analysts have longargued that China should be very cautious on buying US government bondssince dollar is bound to weaken. Others hold that US treasury debts arestill the best and first choice for China's near $2 trillion foreignexchange reserve.

In March, Madam Hu Xiaolian, the chief of China's StateAdministration of Foreign Exchange and a deputy governor of thePeople's Bank of China, China's central bank, said that investing in USnational debt is an essential part of China's reserve management. Butwhile continuing to buy US national debt, China is concerned about therisk of the fluctuation in value of its assets.

China has announced that it would buy up to $50 billion in bondsissued by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Meanwhile, Russia andBrazil have said they are planning to buy up to $10 billion in IMFbonds, which would mean selling Treasury bonds. India has expressed thesame interest. In April, China, Russia, and Brazil all reduced theirholdings of US treasury debt.

China now believes that a long-term dollar decline is inevitable, and the risk to the value of its $2 trillion foreign exchange reservehas become realistic, if not imminent.

China has been a huge beneficiary of the order of the world economyand a monetary system with the US dollar as the reserve currency.China's economy has been anchored by a stable dollar exchange pegged byChina's currency, RMB.

But the financial crisis has given China a wake up call that thepresent monetary system is not sustainable, and neither is China'sforeign exchange regime and mode of economic growth, which has beenlargely based on relentless exporting.

What, then, is the role RMB can play in the future? The BRIC summit is a convenientplatform for China and the other BRIC powers, set to become the 4 ofthe 6 largest economic entities by 2050, to put a bit of pressure onthe US. In return, Russia hopes the others will be willingto buy financial instruments issued by Russia. The leaders discussedincreasing of the share of settlement currencies for trade among them. They also discussed adjusting their reserve assets portfolio in acoordinated way.

At the SCO meeting held just before the BRIC summit and attended byChina, Russia and India, China proposed to research the feasibility ofusing a super-sovereignty currency among SCO member countries.

Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed that trade amongSCO countries be settled by currencies of member countries. These nations will meet on June 16th and the reservestatus of the USD is expected to be a key topic of discussion. Chineseand Russian officials have expressed concern about the USD reservestatus and their holdings of US assets. Recent speculation that the USAAA debt rating could be lowered heightens concern about the potentialrisks of holding U.S.treasuries. Earlier this week, the Russianpresident said that the BRIC may discuss his proposal to create a newworld currency. Russia has reduced its USD reserves from 45% to 41.5%and increased its euro reserves to 44% from 47.5%. Russia's centralbank says that it will reduce holdings of US treasuries. Russia maysell some of its USD reserves and move them to IMF bonds. The Russianpresident says that China supports the idea of the need for a globalreserve currency to replace the dollar.

Chinese officials have expressed concern about the expanding Fedbalance sheet and rising US budget deficit. China’s Zhou said thatChina is concerned about the value of its US holdings. Last week, U.S.Treasury Secretary Geithner met with Chinese officials to reassure theChinese that the US is committed to reducing its fiscal deficit andthat their USD holdings are safe. The Financial News reported Thursdaythat China will look to diversify but will also continue to buy UStreasuries because of lack of alternatives. Brazil is also looking todiversify some of its USD reserves. Brazil recently announced that itplans to buy $10 bln IMF bonds. Indian officials have not taken a leadin the discussion about USD reserve status but they have not objectedto the idea.

US interest rates have risen to the highest level in eight-monthsand the USD is trading near 2009 lows. The interest rate rise and USDdecline reflects concern about the growing risk to the USD reservestatus and funding of the US deficit. New York University economistRoubini says the USD may lose its reserve status. Goldman Sachsanalysts are recommending that central banks diversify out of USholdings. Sixty-three percent of global reserves are held in the USD.The breakdown of the BRIC USD reserves and total global USD reserves in$ billion is noted below.

China 1,534

Russia 476

India 275

Brazil 180

Global 6,898

What are some of the possible risks if the BRIC countries decide tospeed up diversification out of US holdings and broaden discussionsabout the need for a global reserve currency at next week's BRICmeeting in Russia? The biggest risk could be that the dollar may fallsharply in value as investors dump US treasuries. A sharp decline inthe value of the dollar could make it more difficult for the US to fundits budget deficit. Interest rates may continue to rise, the Fed’sbalance sheet will expand and inflation could surge. These factorswould present a major threat to the US recovery and the global economy.Fed Chairman Bernanke said he is confident that the USD will remain themain reserve currency for many years to come. The BRIC countries mayhave a big say in whether Bernanke is right. The BRIC must be carefulnot to trigger a dollar crisis as a freefall in the USD would hurt thevalue of their already large holdings of US treasuries.

We expect the Russian officials to continue to press for a newglobal reserve currency and China to be more circumspect planning toposition the Yuan for a greater global reserve role in the years tocome. Chinese officials will be careful not to make statements thatcould trigger a dollar crisis.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some major energy funds did have a 25%+ per year during the last2 years or so. Past performance cannot guarentee future price. If oiland energy continues at the existing rate, then you should invest inenergy funds. Alternatively, gold and precious metals are in the samesituation as oil and energy. Normally, the risk and the return aresomewhat equal. If 25% is secure, we would have CPI growth of 25%,interest rate at 25%, inflation at 25%, and bond at 25%. When I say 25%I meant roughly 25%. You could try to speculate and make 25% a year, but it is also possible you lose 10-20%. The greater the reward, thegreater the risk. (Sometime risk is greater) There is no free lunch. Ifsomething looks too good to be true, it probably is. Good luckinvesting!

How do you choose the
Posted: 04 Sep 2009 at 10:13am

Well, let me be the first to tell you that a credit card can be a"safety net" in the event that you're in a crunch in between paychecks, and especially renting cars. Granted, you can use your debit card, butyou better have the money on it, becuase credit and debit cards workcompletely different in that respect. But even if you just make smallpayments that you pay off in full every month, it's another way tobuild credit, which you can't build alone just by paying off loans.Credit and the scoring system is designed to where you should show thatyou can handle different types of credit bothinstallment(car, furniture, appliance, pers… signature, and mortgages) andrevolving (credit cards and line of credit). An example of a balancedmixture of credit is 3 credit cards (2 major and one department storecard) and either one paid or currently paying installment account.

Now while it is a good thing to have a credit card in the event ofemergencies that may come about that could potentially wipe out yourchecking account if you use that, it's important to know the truemeaning of needs vs. wants. Credit cards are not bad, it's thejudgement of some people that use them. They easily confuse the 2 andthat's where the problems arise. As long as you keep your prioritiesstraight, and use credit like it's supposed to be used, then you shouldbe ok.

A credit card you should look for, ideally is one without an annual feeand a low or 0 introductory interest rate. But my advice is to keep thebalance no more than 30% of your total available credit to minimize theinterest anyway.
